Clean Lenses = Flawless Picture

Smartphones is our go-to device, isn't it? We not only carry our smartphones in pocket or bag but also randomly place it over the coffee table or maybe on the floor or any surface for that matter without realizing that, the dust and grime can spoil the lens. Obviously, capturing a photo with soiled lens that's smudged with fingerprints, filth and dust on it can spoil the photo and make it look blur. It's a no brainer right? So then what must be done? Well, ensure to always clean the lenses preferably, with a microfiber cloth or any soft material before clicking a photo.

Use Grid lines When Taking Shots

One of the easiest ways to help improve your photography on a smartphone is to switch on the gridlines, which can be found under the camera settings of your Android smartphone or iPhone. On enabling the gridlines feature to click a snap you will notice a series of lines into the screen of your smartphones camera.

For example , according to the rule of thirds (a photographic composition principle that says an image should be broken down into thirds both horizontally and vertically). The picture will turn out to be a 'good click' if you adjust and place the subject where two gridlines intersect. Here's how you can check or enable the gridline feature in your smartphone camera settings.

Step 1: Open the Camera App of your iPhone or iPad –>

Step 2: Click on the settings icon –> And Tap on the "Photos & Camera." Option.

Step 3: You will find three option under camera – Grid / Record Video/ Record Slo-mo.

Step 4:  Tap on the Grid option toggle, to enable this feature.

Step 1 : Open the default camera app in your smartphone.

Step 2: Tap on the settings option located on the upper left corner, –> Scroll down to find the gridlines option under General.

Step 3: You will come across three options which are:- off or 3×3 or square or 3×3 or 4×4 & golden ratio, in some devices.

Step 4: You can tap on either of the options that suits best according to your preference.

Get Closer

Although, most smartphones are equipped with a built-in zoom feature NEVER use it. It may enlarge the pic when you click, but such photos generally turn out to be pixelated blurry and of low quality. Instead, it's advisable to move closer to the subject. If it isn't possible then click the picture from the default distance and further crop it as required. For example; when you want to take a picture of the sun setting or sun rising or a moon lit sky you can zoom in and crop the photo after you have taken it from a distance. By doing this you can ensure you avoid compromising the quality of the picture and manage to get the desired shot.

Use the Landscape Mode

Use the landscape orientation rather than the portrait orientation for some of your shots. The landscape orientation allows you to fit more into the photograph and is perfect for taking pictures of large groups of people as well as nature photos. They'll also look better when viewing them on your PC, laptop or smart TV. Want to find out how to enable the landscape Mode on your phone? Well, here's how it's possible;

Step 1: Click on the Settings icon in your smartphone.

Step 2: Tap on the Accessibility Option under settings. You will find a list of options under it.

Step 3: Tap on the Auto Rotate screen option to enable the landscape mode.

Once enabled, your screen will automatically rotate horizontally every time you wish to click a picture in landscape mode.

Step 1: Open the control center –>Check if the Portrait Mode  is highlighted i.e. if it's active or locked.

Step 2: Tap on the Portrait Mode icon  to disable it this will allow you to click pictures in a landscape mode.

Higher the Resolution Better the Picture

Yes you read it right! High resolution make your picture look better. Thankfully, nowadays smartphone cameras are designed with multiple resolution options to select from to click pictures in high resolution quality. However, high resolutions could require more storage space. Keeping this in view you can either use external storage devices or use cloud storage facilities like Google drive, Picasa, drop box etc. Alternatively, you can also purchase a high capacity memory cards to store these high resolution photos directly on your phone.

Create Interesting Photos with Angles

Every angle highlights a different perspective of the subject.  It gives an entirely different look to the picture. And to your surprise, this is no rocket science all you need to do is move your smartphone higher, lower depending on which angle you want to capture the subject in your lenses. There are basically, five types of angles that you can experiment around with:

  • Bird's Eye View: It the highest camera angle that allows you to highlight the details of the subject by placing the camera on the overhead of the subject you intend to click.
  • Bug's Eye View: Also known as the 'worm's eye view', you can add a very unique and distinct perspective to your photo via this angle. All you need to do is get down low and look straight upwards towards the subject you wish to click.
  • Face to Face : As the name suggest this angle is usually used to click portrait pictures. In this angle, the camera is placed at the eye level of the subject through this you can not only capture intrigued details of the subject but also, create a sense of connection with the viewer.
  • High Angle: Although not as high as the bird view angle, the high angle is usually used to make your subject look smaller. All you need to do it place the camera a little higher than the subject you intent to capture.
  • Low Angle: This technique is exactly opposite to the high angle. As lower you get down to capture the click of your subject the bigger it appears. This style is usually used when you want to emphasize and portrait a feeling of larger than life to your click.

PRO TIP : high angle will make your subject look smaller, whereas, low angle will make it appear look big .

Shoot in Natural Light or…. Create one!

Picture this: You happen to click a lot of photos at the office party only to find more of those unsightly red-eye and washed-out images. Although, it's common when using the flash feature in your camera you can easily fix these issues in few simple steps:

Low Light Situations –There are times when you would want to click a snap in low light situations like click a candid in a moon lit night etc. So, if you ever plan to click any photos in low light situations then ensure you keep the smartphone steady with the help of a tripod. Don't have one? Well how about using your surrounds? for example; a book or table, etc. and use your earbuds and click the volume button to trigger the shutter or set your phone on a timer.

To get a good click it is best to click pictures in natural light. If in any case you plan to take some snaps at the comfort of your home then you can simply place your subject in a room that has a large window or where there is ample natural light. If you are shooting in the evening but require warm look and feel to the picture then lit the bulbs in your house or room to provide you with the natural warm look.
